We have been held 0-0 at St James' Park four times in our European history, and twice we have progressed to the next round.
As Fairs Cup holders, in 1969, we face our very first all-England tie when Southampton came to Tyneside.
They got the result they wanted, but Pop Robson scored in a 1-1 draw at the Dell and we won on away-goals.
In November 1999 we lost 1-0 in the 'Eternal City' to Roma with a goal from Marco Delvecchio, and we couldn't overturn the result two weeks later.
April 2004 we played in the UEFA Cup semi-finals against French side Olympique Marseille and mis-fired despite Gary Speed and Andy O'Brien coming close in the final minutes.
Then a Didier Drogba-inspired performance rocked the Magpies in France and we lost 2-0.
But ... August 2006 and we won 1-0 in Latvia against FK Ventspils with a Titus Bramble goal ... and held out in the second leg.
So it just goes to show ... ALWAYS KEEP BELIEVING!
"MAGPIES IN EUROPE" is still available on-line for £9.99 - and that includes the postage!
