Kennedy says 'look at the players who have played for both clubs'.
Look at Lee Clark, Michael Chopra, Michael Bridges, Paul Bracewell, Steve Caldwell, Bob Moncur, etc. who have played for both Newcastle and Sunderland ... but that doesn't say we're bossom buddies with the filth doon the road.
Alan Kennedy: "I know that one set of fans will be leaving Anfield disappointed on Sunday.
The Toon And Those 'Strong Links'?
"But before the game, we all know what it is going to be like.
"I've played for both teams and I know what football means to them.
"There's an unbelievable affinity and has been for many years.
"You look at the players who have played for both clubs, Kevin Keegan, Ian Rush, John Barnes, myself the list goes on and they all know what we're talking about here - the fans are very close
"Down the years there have been great games between the two teams.
"And I honestly think that most Liverpool fans won't want to see Newcastle relegated.
"Sure, once the game starts the banter from the Kop will be flying back and forwards from the Newcastle fans.
"But that's the same if you are a player, friendships are forgotten for 90 minutes.
"Liverpool's record is very decent and they are doing very well, their run is still going.
"You look at Newcastle. And it will be backs against the wall.
"I watched the Pompey game and they did very well at times but they needed that win.
"That's made this game harder.
"I'd hate to see them go down. They have a chance still because of teams like Hull City who are still around them.
"Those two home games are key for them and if they do win them both, they have a realistic chance.
"That would put them on 37 points going into the last game. You'd have to say they have a chance and they are in with a shout."
