We reported last week we heard rumours from St James' Park that Thierry Henry was the man with the "X Factor", but no national newspaper jumped on board, because the former Arsenal star says he is content at Barcelona.
But Sir Alex Ferguson was said to be set to make a move for him, and Ashley continues to tell us we will be "gob-smacked" at the star he is going to sign.
Ferguson is no longer confident of signing Dimitar Berbatov of Tottenham Hotspur, and Henry has emerged as an intriguing alternative.
Thierry Henry For Newcastle?
Although Henry has played down talk of a move away from Barcelona, he is far from happy in Spain, playing ionly a bit-part in Barca's failed title challenge last season.
Whether reports of United's apparent interest in Henry are merely intended to make Tottenham sweat - especially because the North London club are likely to need the money from Berbatov to sign another striker - is unclear, but Mike Ashley is said to be willing to back KK.
Keegan said last May at a talk-in: "If I could sign anyone in the world, I'd have to say it would be Henry."
Ashley has been concerned how slow sponsors are at taking up their option on buying boxes at SJP this season, and he called the 24 sponsors who are stalling to attend a talk in.
They were invited to ask questions, and although Ashley refused to name names and comment on Henry, he said: "You will be amazed at who we sign before the transfer window closes."
He also told the audience: "Kevin Keegan decides who we sign ... no-one else! Dennis Wise has a contract to bring in six star youngsters a season, and he has no influence who Kevin Keegan signs".
