Keegan brought in class internationals while Hughton is operating within tight financial parameters.
Chris Hughton: “The last time we came up Newcastle were at a very different stage to where Newcastle is at this moment.
“The club did go through a big period of expectations and of course bringing in big name players.
"More importantly it was a period being very close to the top of the Premier League.
“We are not there at the moment. At this moment we are a side which is building towards something – even the feeling of our own supporters is that expectations levels have been dampened and on the playing side we are grateful for that.
“They realise where we are at the moment, we have been through tough periods and we need to build again.
"That is where this football club is at this moment. We have just had a season in the Championship and without a huge outlay you can’t expect a team outside the top flight to then finish in a European spot.
“We all know that and it is a realisation of where we have been in the last season and that we have to build again as a football club.”
