The St James' Park club suffered another setback as they were beaten 2-0 at Brighton in the FA Cup ... but it was the heartless performance that was most worrying.
Alan Pardew: "We need to get our best players back and quickly.
"We need to sustain ourselves and make sure we're a Premier League team next season.
"We want to stay there but we are in danger and we need to get our best players out on the pitch.
"We didn't have enough quality on the pitch for a Newcastle team. "We are missing so many players.
"Our younger players gave everything they could but it wasn't enough. It didn't help when we went down to 10 men.
"If I am being honest that team was a shadow of the team we can put on the field.
"We need to get some bigger players back, who can handle the situation of carrying the Newcastle jersey. Whether that is a signing or getting a player back from injury, I don't know."
