Roeder has the UEFA A coaching badge but not the Pro-Licence, while Shearer still requires his UEFA A certificate. However, Toon reserve team coach Tommy Craig does have the relevant qualifications and could, if required, stand-in as caretaker to satisfy PL rules for the last two or three games if United made it to Wembley for the FA Cup final.
LMA chief John Barnwell: "It is a Premier League rule but one we support. It is essential in modern-day management to have the relevant qualifications.
All Premier League managers must have it and we strongly recommend clubs from the Championship have it as well because if they got promoted they would not be able to manage at top level without it.
"We know, like in Newcastle's case, caretakers have three months grace and the only way that a club can get special dispensation is if the manager is ill. This was due to the situation at Liverpool a few years ago when Gerard Houllier was ill and Phil Thompson did not have a Pro-Licence. It takes up to two-and-a-half years to get the UEFA B, UEFA A and Pro-Licence badges and Glenn is not too far away from getting his."
A Premier League spokesman: "The rules state that a temporary manager can only do the job for 12 weeks after that any club with a manager without the right coaching badges would be in breach of Premier League rules."
