Middlesbrough and Fulham have been beaten finalists in recent years, and Perch believes his side have at least a chance of emulating the famous 1969 Fairs Cup side.
James Perch: “If you look back on the previous finals in this competition, there have obviously been great teams who have done well and got to the final.
“There are also a few who I would say are smaller than Newcastle and yet they have also reached the final, so why not us?
“Our next game is at home against Brugge and we will look to win that and then move on from there.
“There is no reason why we cannot go on a good run, especially if we beat Brugge in our next game.
“That would take us to seven points and keep us top of the league. We want to stay there.
“The fans have really got behind us in Europe. You can see what it means to them.
“That is the Geordies for you. They are so passionate and no matter if i is 10,000 or 50,000, they will sing their hearts out.”
