Despite taking the lead in the 7th minute through Matty Pattison, set up by Lua Lua, Newcastle let the lead slip when Paul Huntington gifted Jacob Mellis the equaliser. Huntington, who had a torrid time against AZ Alkmaar in the UEFA Cup last week, mistimed his tackle on Mellis.
Alex Francis handled in the box to give Sheff Utd the lead from the spot on 75 minutes, converted by Ayman Tahar, and the Yorkshiremen made it 3-1 in injury time through Nicky Travis.
Newcastle coach Lee Clark: "Matty Pattison had one of his best games for a long time and I was pleased with him, but that's the sort of performance we expect from him.
"The goal was thoroughly deserved for the way we started the game and Matty took it very well.
"The performance was a lot better than down at Blackburn last week and we passed the ball well.
"I know in the second-half we have give away a couple of easy goals but I'm not going to be too harsh on what was again a very young side.
"As long as I can see an improvement and they are listening to what I'm saying then I'm more than happy."
