Having already brought in Joey Barton, Mark Viduka, David Rozehnal and Geremi, Allardyce is still not finished in the transfer market.

The Newcastle manager had a bid accepted for an unnamed Premiership defender last week (thought to be Gabriel Heinze), but that player turned down the opportunity of a move to St James's Park, even though his club had indicated they wanted to sell.

The Journal today claims the Magpies have identified the 6ft 5in Hangeland as a player who has the ability to succeed in the Premiership.

The 26-year-old, who was born in Texas, plays for Denmark's FC Copenhagen and has been a key figure in the Norwegian national side for several years, winning 33 caps.

Jim Solbakken (agent): "There is a lot of interest in Brede. Yes, Newcastle are one of several clubs interested. Brede would definitely like to play in such a competition as the Premier League, but it depends on Copenhagen. If they receive the right offer and the right club comes in for Brede, maybe he could leave. We will wait and see what happens."
