Toon Defeat But Experience Cannot Be Bought

Over 5,000 turned up and despite the 4-2 defeat, Wharton was still upbeat saying the experience gained will help his youngsters.

Wharton: "It was a big well done to the people who turned out - 5,000 fans is fantastic for the lads. It's a shame that when we do get a big crowd we don't win for them

"It is a big factor for them because you can judge who can play in front of a crowd or see those who find it a bit difficult. The crowd got behind the lads and gave them a lift.

"The lads have worked to get to the semis and the tie isn't finished yet either.

"We were shell-shocked after the first half. Liverpool looked as though they were going to score every time they went forward, and that's more or less what they did.

"They were helped by us, though. We played poorly from a defensive point of view without a doubt.

"In the second half we were more direct and Andy Carroll and Kazenga LuaLua worked well together.

"From what I saw in the second half we still have a realistic chance."
