Newcastle midfielder Nicky Butt was involved in an ugly half-time bust-up at White Hart Lane, then responded by firing in the winner against Tottenham.
The former England midfielder was raging at the interval after he appeared to be slapped by Pascal Chimbonda, but he then helped his side complete a fine comeback in a thrilling Barclays Premiership clash.
Paul Huntington's first goal for Newcastle had cancelled out Jermaine Defoe's opener before Dimitar Berbatov restored the lead in the end-to-end clash.
Obafemi Martins stunned Spurs with a spectacular strike with 19 minutes left then set up Butt for the winner two minutes later, giving Newcastle hope of establishing themselves in mid-table.
Martin Jol's men have now lost consecutive games at home - after winning 12 in a row - and wasted their best chances as they looked for the points to help them break into the top six.
The opening half was full of chances and highlighted the strengths and weakness of each side, Spurs attacking with pace but also looking shaky without the influence of skipper Ledley King in defence.
The visitors could not be faulted for effort but were struggling for numbers, in particular a partner for Martins in attack.
The corresponding fixture last season saw Michael Owen pick up his famous metatarsal injury, and Newcastle's injury worries had increased in the year that has passed.
Only two players remained from that clash - Nolberto Solano and Shay Given - and Glenn Roeder was without midfield pair Emre and Scott Parker.
Emre, who was charged by the Football Association earlier in the week for using racist language, had been struggling with a groin injury while Parker was back from suspension but not in the matchday squad.
Spurs attempted to capitalise on Newcastle's inexperience and Given kept the visitors in the game early on.
He used his chest to deny Defoe in the fifth minute when Steed Malbranque slid him through, then the England striker hooked a volley over the bar.
Given, the Republic of Ireland goalkeeper, also had to save from a Berbatov drive and a dipping volley from Malbranque, the latter after Solano's clearance had struck team-mate Steven Taylor in his own six-yard area.
The Newcastle stopper then produced a stunning save to claw away a Defoe header, but the England striker was not to be denied in the 14th minute.
Spurs switched the ball from right to left and Malbranque crossed for Defoe, who had stayed just level with the last defender, and he finished with confidence from close range.
The visitors, however, were level within two minutes when James Milner's free-kick found Huntington unmarked at the back post. The left-back's first effort rebounded back to him off Antoine Sibierski, and he then fired through Paul Robinson's legs at the near post.
Both sides had half chances to grab the advantage, Malbranque wasting the best of them just before the half-hour mark when he lobbed wide after Given had rushed out to clear and was out of position.
Peter Ramage and Solano picked up yellow cards before the interval for fouling Aaron Lennon and Malbranque respectively, and there was added needle in the game stemming from Berbatov trying to block Given's kicks.
Given confronted referee Steve Bennett about it at the break, with Butt and Chimbonda also clashing. Chimbonda appeared to slap Butt, who reacted and pushed the Spurs full-back in the chest, with Butt fuming as he was ushered down the tunnel. Both were booked.
After the break, Matthew Pattison was found at the far post by Milner but could not get power or direction on his header.
Spurs restored the lead in the 54th minute when Chimbonda raced down the right and crossed, Teemu Tainio's finish was blocked by Solano but Berbatov steered his volley into the top corner.
Defoe then stung the palms of Given with a drive as Spurs looked for a third, with Tom Huddlestone's fierce volley dipping just wide with 22 minutes left.
But Martin levelled for the visitors with 19 minutes left, exchanging passes with Kieron Dyer before finding the top corner from the edge of the area.
They were ahead two minutes later when Martins threaded the ball through to Butt, who squeezed his finish in at the far post.
Robbie Keane came on and had a shot blocked by Solano on the line, while Defoe hit the post - but Newcastle held on for victory.

Newcastle lost Michael Owen to injury as they surrendered meekly to Tottenham at White Hart Lane.
The England striker failed to reappear for the second half as Spurs recovered from their surprising midweek defeat at West Brom to consolidate fourth place, ahead of both Arsenal, whose draw at Villa Park left them four points adrift with a game in hand, and Wigan.
Teemu Tainio struck his first goal for Spurs two minutes before the break to bring a drab encounter to life, before Mido hit a bouncing volley over Shay Given to make certain of victory with 24 minutes left.
Newcastle, meanwhile, were simply dreadful - a poor imitation of a side that has spent so much on new signings.
It is in defence that their real problems lie. Until they address those failings, they will continue to struggle, with Titus Bramble at fault for Spurs' first goal and Celestine Babayaro caught out for their second.
Graeme Souness' side should have benefited from an unexpected midweek break due to the late postponement of their game against Charlton. Not that it showed in a lame first-half display.
Spurs took their time to take advantage, with only Michael Carrick's excellent range of passing rising above the general mediocrity for the instantly forgettable opening 43 minutes.
Robbie Keane, the stand-in captain in the absence of Ledley King, twice had the ball in the net but was flagged offside, while Jermaine Jenas, who was booed by fans of his former club, flicked a header wide from the Irishman's cross.
Finally, with two minutes of the first half, the breakthrough - mercifully - came. Unsurprisingly, it was Tottenham who scored, with Mido flicking on a long pass and, with Bramble slipping at the vital moment, Tainio was left with the space in which to pick his spot inside the far post.
That finally brought the game to life and Owen looked to burst through in the final seconds of the first half, only for keeper Paul Robinson to race out and smother the ball at his feet.
That was Owen's last involvement in the game, with the England striker being replaced at the interval by Albert Luque, while Babayaro came on for Peter Ramage.
Luque came onto the left wing, with Shola Ameobi moving up front to partner Alan Shearer, who remains one goal short of Jackie Milburn's club scoring record.
Luque was immediately involved as his 20-yard effort was deflected wide for a corner, which Shola Ameobi headed wide, while Scott Parker thrashed a shot just off target.
But Newcastle were still vulnerable at the back, with Keane putting Jenas through only for the midfielder to strike the side-netting with his shot.
After that brief spell of pressure from Newcastle, Spurs nevertheless resumed their domination of possession, buoyed by two outstanding pieces of control, firstly by Jenas and then by Keane.
Mido initially spoiled Keane's moment by heading his ensuing cross straight into the air, but the centre-forward made amends shortly afterwards with his side's second goal on 66 minutes.
Although Amady Faye, who had been non-existent up to that point, made an important block on Edgar Davids, Celestine Babayaro failed to clear the ball and Keane swung a dangerous cross to the far post, where Mido was lurking unmarked.
The Egypt international enjoyed a certain amount of good fortune, with his volley bouncing into the ground and over keeper Given, but the visitors only had themselves to blame for another costly defensive lapse.
Keane was finally taken off with 10 minutes left to a rapturous ovation from the crowd and a bear-hug from boss Jol as he was left in no doubt that the club wish to keep him during the transfer window.
Although Jermain Defoe replaced Keane, it was Davids who continued to threaten, this time with a 20-yard drive which flashed just inches wide, while Mido's effort was ruled out for offside.
Newcastle's misery was nevertheless complete when Ameobi somehow contrived to lift a shot over the bar from just eight yards out after Paul Robinson could only parry an effort from substitute Charles N'Zogbia.
While Tottenham are looking to Europe, Newcastle can only look over their shoulders.

Tottenham are dreaming of a place in Europe next season after Jermain Defoe's first-half strike helped them to a deserved win over Newcastle.
Defoe seized on a mix-up between Newcastle 'keeper Steve Harper and defender Celestine Babayaro to turn in his 22nd goal of the season shortly before half-time.
It could have been more comfortable for Spurs - Defoe, Fredi Kanoute and Simon Davies all missed chances - but this win moves them into seventh place, which could be good enough to qualify for next season's UEFA Cup.
Newcastle were poor, however. Last weekend's on-pitch fight between Lee Bowyer and Kieron Dyer appears to have upset their rhythm, and manager Graeme Souness will demand a better performance from his side in Lisbon in the second leg of their UEFA Cup quarter-final tie against Sporting on Thursday.
Robbie Keane once more had to settle for a place on the Tottenham bench and speculation increases that he will leave the club at the end of the season.
But Spurs boss Martin Jol did make three changes to his starting XI, with Davies, Anthony Gardner and Stephen Kelly replacing injured trio Reto Ziegler, Nourredine Naybet and Noe Pamarot.
Bowyer and Dyer missed out through suspension for Newcastle following their fight in the match against Aston Villa last weekend, while Steven Taylor was also suspended and goalkeeper Shay Given missed out with a hip injury.
Harper was brought in between the posts, with Nicky Butt, Jean-Alain Boumsong and fit-again Babayaro the other changes to the side that beat Sporting Lisbon 1-0 on Thursday.
Spurs started brightly, winning the ball in midfield and passing it crisply.
In the third minute, Michael Brown collected a clearance on the edge of the Newcastle penalty area and made space for himself, but his fierce left-foot shot was well saved by Harper.
Harper almost embarrassed himself with a mis-hit clearance, from Butt's risky back-pass, that spun behind for a corner two minutes later.
But he saved his team in the ninth minute, flinging himself bravely at the feet of Defoe to prevent the England striker latching onto Andy Reid's near-post cross from the left.
Newcastle got behind their hosts for the first time in the 15th minute. Jermaine Jenas released Shola Ameobi with an excellent lofted pass, but Ledley King was quick to read the situation and put the ball behind for a corner.
Ameobi should have given Newcastle the lead in the 27th minute, but he headed another fine cross from Jenas into the ground at the far post and the ball bounced over the crossbar.
But Spurs came straight back. Butt was twice caught in possession as the home side sought to go forward, and on the second occasion the former Manchester United midfielder was robbed on the edge of his own box by Davies.
The Welshman burst into the area and shot, by was denied by Boumsong's timely block.
In the 32nd minute, Gardner rose above the Newcastle defence but headed Brown's free-kick wide of the right post.
Defoe gave Spurs the lead after a dreadful mix-up in the Newcastle defence.
Babayaro passed the ball back onto Harper's weaker left foot, and the goalkeeper could only clear the ball against Davies.
It was Defoe who reacted quickest to force the loose ball over the line from six yards.
Newcastle suffered another blow when captain Alan Shearer failed to re-emerge for the second half after sustaining what appeared to be a dead leg in the first period.
He was replaced by James Milner, who went to partner Ameobi in attack.
In the 48th minute, Magpies defender Andy O'Brien failed to control Spurs 'keeper Paul Robinson's clearance and allowed Defoe to take possession, but Boumsong was on hand once more to produce a superb block and deny the prolific forward.
Robinson thanked his good fortune in the 58th minute. The England 'keeper tried to play a short ball to Gardner, but the centre-back did not read the situation and James Milner was able to seize possession and chip Robinson, but the ball went wide of the right post.
It was Harper's turn to escape in the 66th minute when he failed to claim Reid's through ball, but he was able to grab the ball from the feet of Davies at the second attempt.
Spurs should have sealed the points in the 75th minute, but Kanoute shot over from inside the area after Defoe had held off former Spurs defender Stephen Carr and fed his strike partner with a marvellous pass.
But while Spurs led by only one goal, Newcastle sensed they could steal a point.
Ledley King produced a great block to divert Milner's shot from the edge of the box, and the England defender did even better to cut out the resulting cross from substitute Charles N'Zogbia.
At the other end, Babayaro's desperate challenge prevented Kanoute turning in Reid's left-wing cross at the near post with seven minutes left.
