Toon Euro Hopes In John Carver's Hands

Pardew’s clash with Hull midfielder David Meyler resulted in Newcastle making the back pages of most of the Sunday newspapers knocking the coverage of the League Cup final off the headlines in some publications.

Pardew, sent to the stands during the 4-1 win over the Tigers, was hit with a £100,000 fine for his actions and faced a public wrist slapping by United chiefs.

However, United said last night that they were not planning any further punishment, despite calls from some leading football figures for the Toon boss to be sacked.

Pardew must wait to see what the Football Association’s punishment will be today.

He could face a lengthy ban and the FA also have the option of handing Pardew a complete stadium ban on match days.

That was the case for ex-Blackpool boss Paul Ince earlier this season when he shoved an official and let fly with a expletive-laden rant.

However Pardew’s case is unprecedented and the FA may want to make an example of the United manager.

Carver carried out the role of head coach at Toronto FC and Leeds United during his career.

And should Pardew be hit with a severe touchline ban, Carver’s role could become significant in the final 10 matches.

A club statement read: “His behaviour was unacceptable and is not the behaviour we expect from the manager of Newcastle United.

“It is most disappointing that this incident has taken the focus away from what was a fantastic performance by the team and an excellent result away from home which leaves the club in eighth place in the Barclays Premier League.

“Alan unreservedly apologised immediately following the game to the player, to Hull City FC and its fans, and to the fans of Newcastle United.”
