We hoped for a striker, a central defender or a pair of full-backs ... but as most Toon fans will agree, you rarely get what you want following Newcastle United FC. Instead, a bolt out of the sky blue, Glenn Roeder has signed ANOTHER midfield player!
Antoine Sibierski is the shock new arrival at St James' Park. A move that has many United fans wondering if Roeder has the pulling power to get the big names, as he endured yet another frustrating search through the transfer market that ended in failure.
The Magpies had hoped to sign another striker and defender before the close of the window. But having "dillied and dallied" all summer, seeing 30-odd targets go elsewhere, time ran out on Shepherd and his manager.
It leaves Roeder with a squad which has lost Alan Shearer, Michael Chopra, Lee Bowyer, Amdy Faye, Robbie Elliott, Jean-Alain Boumsong and Martin Brittain ... under strength in so many departments.
And WHY? Because 30-odd players didn't want to come here! And that answer poses the same question - WHY?
Chairman Freddy Shepherd had hoped to be able to complete the deals for Chelsea's England left-back Wayne Bridge, Real Madrid's Jonathan Woodgate, Chelsea's Robert Huth and Boro's Mark Viduka. But it all went wrong.
