It would be fair to say that there was a lot of excitement amongst Newcastle United fans when the club managed to sign Jesus Gamez from Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2016.
A former Champions League runner-up, Gamez arrived at St James’ Park with a big reputation, but it has not turned out how the Spaniard would have wanted.
Gamez has not been seen in a Newcastle shirt since the end of September, when he made a brief appearance against Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League.
An ankle problem has kept him on the sidelines since the end of November, and he has actually only made 10 appearances for the Magpies in all competitions.
Gamez turned 33 on Tuesday, and Newcastle’s official Twitter account was on hand to provide the defender with a birthday message.
The Premier League club’s supporters, however, simply had the chance to poke fun at the former Spain Under-23 international, who is believed to be on £35,000 a week at Newcastle.
