Why UEFA picked Baku for tonight's European final is up for judgement, and many would suggest someone - somewhere - got a back-hander.
Fans of the London clubs have faced a logistical nightmare but former Newcastle forward Micky Quinn is still disappointed they could not sell out their 6,000 allocation
Former Newcastle United forward Micky Quinn has upset Arsenal and Chelsea fans by claiming Newcastle fans 'would have walked to Baku' to see their side in the Europa League final.
The two Premier League sides will contest the Europa League final this evening but the decision to host it in the capital of Azerbaijan has proven to be a logistical nightmare.
The price of flights to Baku from London rose exponentially once it was confirmed the two clubs had reached the final, while official travel packages cost almost £1,000.
Baku officials wanted fans to fly to neighbouring Georgia then travel 580km on land to the game as one solution. Some fans have had to commute via Istanbul and there are even tales of fans having to drive through Baghdad to get to Baku.
UEFA have come under fire for the choice to host the game in Baku and last week, both Premier League clubs had plans to send back a combined total of over 6,000 tickets - more than half their original allocations - having only managed to shift 5,500 between them.
It remains to be seen how full the 60,000 capacity Olympic Stadium will be come kick-off at 7:45pm.
Nonetheless, Quinn criticised fans for not selling out their allocations and suggested Newcastle - who have not reached a major final since 1999 - and Liverpool would have had no trouble selling out their ticket allocation had it been them contesting the final.
"They got 6,000 (tickets) each," Quinn told TalkSPORT.
"I am looking at Arsenal, a big Premier League club. Chelsea, a big Premier League club.
"They must have a worldwide fanbase with the Premier League going worldwide and they can't get 6,000 fans to go to Baku. Arsenal or Chelsea.
"Whatever how dangerous the trip is or how long the trip is, no. I find it astonishing they can't fill an allocation of 6,000 to go to a Europa League final. A European cup final.
"Liverpool would fill 6,000 and Newcastle United fans would walk there.
"It might be me being naive but they can't fill 6,000 tickets?
"I thought they would be scrapping over extra tickets and they have given half of them back.
"I just can't get my head around it. Two teams both hungry for silverware, both managers want to win and there is a Champions League place next year."
