The Republic of Ireland international was part of Martin O’Neil’s squad to face Bosnia and Herzegovina in their Euro 2016 qualifying playoff but didn’t feature as a precaution over his fitness.
With Tim Krul ruled out for the season and Karl Darlow absent, Elliot has become the Magpies’ number one custodian, and McClaren must have been cursing his luck when he picked up a thigh injury.
However, with a two-week recovery period, the 29-year-old has been declared fully fit to resume action.
“He’s fine and he’s fit for the game. We said that to Martin O’Neil a couple of weeks ago. We were up front, we told them he would be fit and we wanted him to play against Leicester so we were open about it,” Newcastle boss McClaren was quoted as saying by the Chronicle.
