The 19-year-old striker was congratulated by his Sky Blues team-mates after his fourth minute shot took a wicked deflection off Marc-Antoine Fortune to give City the lead against Sheffield United.
But he revealed afterwards: “We were laughing in the dressing room but it hit Marco so it’s going to have to be his goal.
“It’s not all about me. We got the three points and a good win against a strong side and that’s more important.
“I think I have done well this season. I haven’t scored for a while but all strikers go through spells like this and I am still working hard on the training pitch and if a chance comes next week I’m going to take it.
“I will never stop my hard work and if I do that and keep getting in good positions I’ll get more chances. It would be nice to get my 20th goal but if it doesn’t happen I know I’ve still had a good season here.”
Reflecting on a positive end to the home campaign – the 3-1 victory over the Blades coming as their third consecutive Ricoh victory – Armstrong couldn’t help but think how close City had come to the play-offs.
“It was a brilliant way to end the season at home and I think we needed that performance after last week’s display at Doncaster,” he said.
“I thought we gave it our all from the start and the two early goals killed them. They came onto us in the second half a bit but we expected that so the third goal was crucial in killing them off.
“Last week’s performance wasn’t acceptable and all the lads knew that and have been working hard to put that right.”
