Moncur joined Newcastle in 1960 and had 14 years at the club, making 346 appearances.

A superb Scottish international centre-half, who was captain of the Fairs Cup side, scoring three goals in the two-legged final. Went to Sunderland for £30,000, then became player-manager at Carlisle.

Moncur: "The last thing anybody wanted was for Steven Taylor to leave the
club.

"It would have left Newcastle looking for another centre-back, and players with such ability and potential don't come easy - especially at this stage in the summer.

"It's now one less thing Newcastle have to worry about, and young Taylor can start the pre-season with a clear head at the club he wants to be at.

"It's a real positive for Kevin Keegan, and I am pleased to see this come to a conclusion.

"He's had a very rapid promotion, but he still has a lot of experience to gain.

"There's no substitute for experience, and if he keeps learning and avoids the distractions, he'll simply get better.

"At this stage of his career it was important that he got this contract sorted so he could go forward.

"It should be an exciting year for Steven and I am delighted for him because he deserves any new deal that comes his way."
