... Shearer has made his feelings crystal clear after they went down to newly promoted Watford at St James' Park
Alan Shearer has lambasted Newcastle United’s “shambolic” defending after their poor performance against newly promoted Watford.
The Newcastle legend has also questioned Florian Thauvin’s approach to the game after turning up wearing a tuxedo, a couple of weeks after the joke had worn thin.
Speaking on Match of the Day, Shearer was left deeply disappointed with the reaction of a Newcastle team that had it all to prove after losing to West Ham.
He said: “This is a Newcastle team that got absolutely battered from pundits and media alike for being beaten 2-0 by West Ham.
“They are at home and you’d expect them to come out, roll their sleeves up and have a right good go.
“I looked at Newcastle and thought: ‘No chance’.
“There wasn’t enough there at all.
“Before anybody has a pop at me Watford were better from start to finish.
“They were better all over the park.
“Deeney and Ighalo were superb and dominated the back four.
“It was far too easy for Watford.
“Watford were brilliant, but helped at times by Newcastle’s shambolic defending.
And hitting out at £13m summer signing Thauvin, Shearer said he found it hard to take the winger seriously from the moment he walked into St James’ Park.
He said: “He turns up in a tux.
“This is a serious business we’re in here, it was funny on the first day of the season, it’s not funny any more.
“When Newcastle walked out they didn’t look focus or prepared, that was for the warm-up.
“Look at Nyom run past Thauvin.
“You might be able to do that in the French League, you can’t do that in the Premier League.
“You have got to track back.”
Shearer also had sympathy for the front men due to the lack of quality deliveries into the box.
He said: “Were Newcastle any better going forward?
“How on earth are you going to score in this team?
“The lack of quality was alarming.”
THE TOON'S GREATEST 100 PLAYERS ... EVER!
AMAZON: http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Toons-Greatest-Players-EVER/dp/132629685X
This book is a collection of the 100 Greatest Newcastle United players of all time, as voted for by NewcastleUtd-Mad.co.uk readers and a panel of journalists who contribute to the website. The players are in an order of five-per-chapter, counting down from 100 to Newcastle United's greatest ever player (as viewed by the author), but the whole point of the book is for YOU (the reader) to decide who goes where. The list is not, by any means, definitive. As with all books of this nature, whether it be "Greatest Albums"; "Best Movies Of All Time"; or "Top 100 Pin-Ups Of The Year" ... no two people have exactly the same opinion. There will be controversy over who is on the list, and chances are, more controversy over who is not. Here are the best of the best. I have painted the picture with each player's profile. Where they end up in the league of NUFC's Greatest is up to you. Because YOU have the final word.
Otherwise ... if you want a signed copy (for a birthday, etc) for £9.95 and no postage ... you can meet me before a match and I will bring a copy along.
