But he was a grafter, rather than out-and-out goal machine like Supermac, and Bob Moncur says we need his like again ... and that could be young Andy Carroll.
Davies scored 53 goals in 216 appearances for Newcastle, but Pop Robson was the player who took advantage of Davies' strength and power - with 55 goals in 111 appearances in two seasons when they were at their peak.
Carroll is young, but he is probably the closest we have seen to Davies in many years.
Kevin Nolan has scored eight goals already this season, from midfield, while the strikers have huffed and puffed in front of goal.
Bob Moncur: “I look back at Wyn Davies who made a lot of goals for others, while Malcolm MacDonald and Alan Shearer can only be described as goal machines while also doing their job elsewhere on the field.
“Newcastle need a player that will get 20 goals or so this season.
“At the rate Nolan is going, it could be him.
“But it’s something every young striker should be striving for.”
