Norwich manager Glenn Roeder has named his former Newcastle team-mate Tommy Wright as the club's new goalkeeping coach.

The 44-year-old former Northern Ireland keeper had two spells at St James' Park, as well as playing for  Hull, Nottingham Forest, Reading, Manchester City, Wrexham and Bolton in his playing career.

Roeder tried to get him to sign in January but he has finally made the move after working part-time at Ballymena .

Wright: "Unfortunately I wasn't able to make the move in January when it was first discussed but my circumstances have changed and I'm absolutely delighted to be joining Norwich City.

"I've been working in part-time football at Ballymena but it has been my ambition to get back involved with the professional game and Norwich is a fantastic club to be given that opportunity at.

"The club has an excellent reputation for producing top quality goalkeepers and that's obviously something we want to keep going. There are some excellent keepers at the club and I'm really looking forward to working with them.

"What Glenn, Lee (Clark) and Paul (Stephenson) are aiming to achieve at Norwich is something very exciting and I'm delighted to be part of that."

We interviewed Tommy during his time at Newcastle when Kevin Keegan first arrived as manager in 1992. Keegan had just made his first signing, Darren McDonough, from Luton.

Keegan had never seen McDonough play, but sent his scouts out looking for "a tough-tackling midfielder who won't cost the earth", and they came up with the Luton player who had sampled football in Belgium for a while.

Signed from Luton for £80,000 he was a character, and Wright told us: "He's not very bright. He thought Newcastle was as far as you could go north, and that every train leaving Central station went south. He bought a ticket for London, caught the first train that arrived, and arrived in Edinburgh.

"And the worst thing he could do was tell the lads about it! We ripped the piss out of him!"

Tommy "The Barman" (he was barman in Belfast before joining Newcastle) was signed from Linfield for £300,000 and was an established Northern Ireland international. Spent a period on loan at Hull City. A goalkeeper who was well respected at Newcastle before moving on. Came back on loan during Ruud Gullit's ill-fated reign, filling in when United went through a goalkeeping crisis.
