Toon Not Interested In Riise

Ex-England midfielder Matthew Le Tissier was very critical of Newcastle on Saturday, saying he "couldn't believe" the Magpies were after John Arne Riise.

"He's past his sell-by date, I thought that two years ago."

As for major summer signings, the former Southampton skipper was just as cutting: "Arteta is a class player, but I think he will leave Everton in the summer. As for Newcastle going for him ... why would he go to Newcastle?

"They are no bigger than Everton. If he wants to win things, he won't do it with Newcastle."

Alan Pardew said today: “The Riise rumours are not true – absolutely not true.

"We didn't have him checked last week (as reported), and he will not be coming to St James' Park."

Pardew said he understood the frustrations of the Toon Army on Saturday after they jeered World Cup referee Howard Webb.

Pardew: “I’ve got to be honest – I didn’t think he helped the cause.

“I thought it was a soft free-kick for the second goal. I thought Arteta played for it.

“There were a couple of challenges that were missed, and the right back (Tony Hibbert who fouled Cheick Tiote) was lucky to stay on the pitch.

“There were a few key incidents, and there wasn’t much in the equalising goal.”
