John Durnin cashed in to make it 2-1 before Neale McDermott – son of Terry – scored with a wonderful chip to hand Liverpool a two-goal cushion at the break.
United won a penalty in the second half but Shearer could only slam it against the bar after Bruce Grobbelaar’s spaghetti legs routine paid off.
Liverpool put the lid on it when sub keeper Steve Wraith hauled down ex-Big Brother winner Anthony Hutton.
But it was Durnin who stepped up to slot number four calmly past the Geordie stopper.
Liverpool held on to their comfortable lead and were good value for their win.
