The rumours, reported to have been started by a fan site affiliated to a rival club, had reached such a level that they had been reported on national radio news bulletins and had an adverse affect on the plc’s share price.
But the club released a statement to the stock exchange on Tuesday afternoon rubbishing the claims.
It read: “Newcastle United notes recent media speculation regarding Sir Bobby Robson and confirms that Sir Bobby Robson has not resigned and that any reports to the contrary are completely unfounded.”
