Taylor’s stunning free-kick got Newcastle United a draw in the first leg of the club’s Europa League qualifier.

Taylor revealed after the game that he’d been hit with a bolt as he took a corner, but fortunately he was unhurt.

Ryan Taylor: "I think their fans let themselves down.

“I went over for a corner, and I got hit on the back with a bolt.

“I didn’t say anything, but it wasn’t nice. There’s no place in football for that.

“From that corner onwards, I think they had something against me.

“I didn’t see how far it was away from goal, to be honest, but I saw (Itlandje) leave a fair old gap that side.

“I just knew I had to get it over the wall, and if I did that, I’d have half a chance.

“These balls fly – they are a different ball to those we play with at home – and when we were shooting with them, they come at you with such a pace.

“I knew if I got it over the wall, I’d have half a chance.

"The free-kick against Sunderland was a day after my birthday, and it was my birthday three or four days ago.

“I’m looking forward to next year’s birthday. It’s great for me, but it was about staying in the tie.

“We knew we were in for a tough game. They had to get at us and try to get a few goals.

“They caught us with a ball over the top and scored. We got back into it with the last kick of the first half.

“To still be in the tie going back home, I think everyone – manager, staff, players and fans – will be happy.

“We played in completely different conditions – it was a different pitch, with different humidity. We were pleased on the whole.”
