After hosting Southampton on Saturday, Newcastle face a 21-day gap in their fixture schedule due to the postponement of the trip to Wembley to take on Tottenham Hotspur the following weekend.
Rafa Benitez admits the Magpies would put themselves in a far stronger position to cope with that fallow game weekend, when their rivals will all play, if they claim all three points against the Saints.
However, he is adamant Newcastle fans must stay calm until the very final game, regardless of what happens this weekend.
“Every game is important so if you win now everyone says: ‘Fantastic.’ And then we have more confidence. Maybe you can approach the next games with more confidence and you win more,” Benitez, who is exploring the possibility of playing a friendly during the three-week gap in Newcastle’s schedule, added.
“But if you can’t win you can still win at the end. You can win the last game and be safe. Every game is an opportunity and nothing else.
“You cannot think about that [the three-week gap]. We have the Tottenham game postponed so it’s one less game.
“We have to go against Southampton, take three points and if not stay calm and carry on until the end.”
