Newcastle knocked out at home to 3rd division team

Kieran Trippier made his Newcastle United debut this afternoon but the reality of what he has walked into may have truly hit home upon hearing the final whistle. Having featured for Atletico Madrid as they kept up their La Liga top four quest last weekend, Trippier and his Newcastle team mates were humbled by Cambridge United in the FA Cup at St James’ Park this afternoon.

Having missed a host of changes in the first half the home side were made to pay for their wastefulness in front of goal on 56 minutes when Joe Ironside gave the visitors an unlikely lead, made all the more dramatic by a lengthy VAR check for offside.

Magpies manager Eddie Howe quickly sent on Almiron and Willock in the search for an equaliser but despite seeing plenty of the ball around their opponents goal the home side could not find a way past Cambridge keeper Mitov and his determined defence.

While the FA Cup is obviously not Newcastle’s priority going into the second half of this season the result is an embarrassing one for the club and not one the new owners of the new manager will have wanted. Success breeds success and a good cup run could have lifted the club as a whole, instead this is yet another negative to take into the next game.
