According to reports today the club has made a an improved £9.5m bid for the Montpellier midfielder.
Newcastle had hoped to push through a bid for the France international before the World Cup, but Montpellier’s outspoken president Louis Nicollin said the original bid of 8m Euros was derisory.
Nicollin has slagged the club off in the French newspapers saying his star player would be a "fool" to go to Tyneside.
The 24-year-old, a late call up to Didier Deschamps’s squad after Clement Grenier suffered an injury, didn’t make a World Cup appearance, but is home in France waiting to see what Newcastle will come up with.
Cabella is understood to be interested in a move to St James’s Park.
Nicollin claimed defender Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa - who he sold to United in January last year - had been wrong to move to Newcastle.
