He has lost Tim Krul and Fabricio Coloccini during a costly break.
The Dutchman is likely to be missing for up to three games, while his South American club-mate is rated as a doubt for Monday night's Premier League trip to Everton at the very least as medics assess the extent of the injury.
Alan Pardew: "We lost [Shane] Ferguson injured on international duty; we have lost Coloccini twice now injured on international duty and we have lost Tim injured on international duty when he trained after the game, which we were disappointed about, if I am honest.
"Therefore, we have put in a procedure now that we want all international sides to inform us what the players are doing, and exactly what they are doing.
"With the technology we have today, GPS and everything else, we want a report back and to know what they are doing because we are handing these players over, to an extent on our pay, so we want to make sure they are looked after.
"Cheick, I would say, is touch and go for next week too, so we are down on what you would like to select from.
"But we have still got very, very good players in the building, so I have got no issues.
"We have lost three of our back five that started the season - that's a significant blow for us because we are not a Chelsea or a Manchester United, who can bring in international players to replace them.
"Having said that, I think our replacements are strong. We are not that much down on going there with those guys."

NEWCASTLE UNITED REVIEW 2011/12
Newcastle United fans have seen their team come a long way since earning promotion back to the Premier League in 2010 and nobody could have predicted the exciting season that lay ahead at the start of the 2011/12 campaign.
This was a season of rejuvenation as changes were made both on and off the pitch with fresh talent drafted in, in the form of Cissé, Cabaye, Ba and Obertan to name a few, and manager Alan Pardew delivering a brand of attacking football that earned him both the Barclays and LMA Manager of the Season awards.
With the new signings settling in well, and with a good core of players already at the club, Newcastle United undertook an incredible journey that saw them return to the upper echelons of the Premier League and secure a place in Europe the following season, only narrowly missing out on a Champions League place.
There was plenty to cheer this season as stalwarts of the team Fabricio Coloccini, Cheick Tiote and Jonas Gutierrez all solidified their reputations at the heart of the club and Tim Krul and Hatem Ben Arfa both delivered impressive displays.
Relive this exhilarating season in full with highlights of every game and every goal from the campaign including victories over Sunderland, Liverpool, Chelsea and a dominating demolition of 2010/11 champions Manchester United.
