Newcastle United will join Barclays Premier League teams from across the country in wearing printed poppies on their shirts this weekend.

It will be the first time the club has worn the famous red flower, which commemorates those who have died while fighting for their country, on their black and white kits.

The shirts will be worn for Saturday's game against Fulham, before being signed and auctioned off via the club's website - www.nufc.co.uk - with all money raised going to the Royal British Legion.

It follows the success of a similar auction last season, when United's shirts from the 4-0 win at Ipswich, which were embroidered with the logo of the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation, which raised over £30,000 for the former Newcastle and England manager's cancer charity.

The club will also hold a minutes' silence before the game.

United manager Chris Hughton said: "The whole country will remember those brave men and women who gave their lives for the country during the war this weekend, and as a club our thoughts will, of course, be with them.

"It's great that the club can pay tribute to them in this way and the lads will be proud to wear the poppy alongside the Newcastle United crest on their shirts."

Captain Kevin Nolan added: "I think it's a fanastic thing for the club to do. The shirt will be a great piece of memorabilia - I'd want to keep it for myself if we weren't auctioning them off!

"The poppy is a great tradition and we're delighted to be able to raise money for a great cause, as well as showing our respect and support to those who've given their lives for our country."
