Police are warning potential troublemakers there will be no hiding place at the stadium this weekend ... and the FA will come down hard on the two clubs should fans clash like they did last season.
Fans are being reminded to behave themselves – both inside and outside the stadium – as the FA threaten to ban Newcastle's away ticket allocation if scenes are repeated.
The pitch invasion at Darlington started the season off in a bad light, and all eyes will be on Sunderland on Saturday.
Northumbria Police are preparing for the fixture, and have warned anyone intent on causing trouble will be arrested.
Chief Superintendent Steve Neill: “All supporters will receive a warm welcome in Sunderland. But anyone intent on causing problems should stay away, and let the real fans enjoy their day out.
“We would remind fans they need to behave responsibly, both inside and outside the stadium, or they risk being arrested and banned from future matches.
“The purpose of the cordon system is to minimise any potential conflict between the opposing sets of fans.
“Newcastle fans will also be asked to remain in the stadium’s South Stand for a short time at the end of the match, which will allow all supporters to leave the ground safely.”
The force says it has worked closely with both clubs, their supporters’ associations and Sunderland City Council to ensure the derby match is played in a safe environment.
