Toon boss Glenn Roeder has offered Chopra a new 12-month deal but he has turned it down. Despite Cardiff making an offer, the Yorkshire club could have the edge because the player still wants to live near Tyneside.
The Yorkshire club will be back in the Championship next season following the win over Swansea in the play-offs at Cardiff, and their chairman says they will give the Geordie youngster the first team opportunities he craves.
Chopra, 22, scored 15 goals during a loan spell with the Tykes in the 2004/05 season and Cryne would relish the opportunity to sign him.
Cryne: "Michael Chopra's name has been mentioned. He is absolutely the kind of player I would like to see but it really comes down to the ambition of Michael Chopra.
"He is the type of player we're interested in. The fans sent out a clear message and Chopra knows he is very well liked at Barnsley. We are not in the phase where we can formally approach players but I'm sure he is a player Andy Ritchie will track."
