The young midfielder has received a call-up to Portugal’s squad for Wednesday’s friendly against Holland, which will perhaps have calmed his major fear that too much time on the bench is damaging his chances of playing in next year’s European Championships in his home country.
"I have a five-year contract with Newcastle United and there is no reason for me to think about playing anywhere else," Hugo told La Bola.
"I have adapted to life in Newcastle and I would like to stay and play here as long as I possibly can.
"Indeed, I would go as far as to say that I am proud to be involved with a club like Newcastle United and a manager like Sir Bobby Robson.
"But I know that I have got to play more for Newcastle United if I am going to represent my country when Portugal hosts the European Championships next summer. It simply is not enough just to say I am with Newcastle, but I have to be playing regularly in the first team."
