The 22-year-old made 28 starts last season, but understands there is ever-growing competition for places in the Newcastle back-line.
Ramage was played out of position many times as injuries plagued both Graeme Souness and Glenn Roeder.
Ramage: "I want to kick on from last season, but I know it's going to be difficult to get into the team. I'll just keep working hard in training and, hopefully, I'll be able to impress the manager if I get a chance.
"Hopefully I'm still in his plans. You never want to be rested - whether you're playing well or badly - but it was the manager's decision to rest me, and I respect that. I didn't have a problem with it - he's the manager and he has to make some tough decisions.
"It's frustrating not playing, as any footballer will tell you. But you have to be patient as a footballer, and when I do get a chance I intend to grab it with both hands."
