He operated with Papiss Cisse as the lone striker to start with against Borrusia M., with Gini Wijnaldum playing just behind him.
But during pre-season, McClaren has also hinted at playing both Cisse and Mitrovic together.
He said: “A lot will depend on how they all train this week.
“People say that training is not important, but it is for us.
“So along with everyone, it depends on how they train as to whether they’ll play, start or be on the bench or in the stand.”
When asked on his overall assessment on Newcastle a month into the job McClaren also added: “As a squad, I think we’ve lacked (something) in our games.
“We’ve kind of lacked goals, and let too many in.
“So that’s kind of where we stand.
“I would like to score more and keep a clean sheet.”
