Newcastle faced a Haka routine before the kick off, which must be a first.
Siem de Jong and Manu Riviere came close in the early exchanges, but Phoenix (who beat West Ham earlier this week) created a chance of their own when Tyler Boyd hit one into the side netting on nine minutes.
Newcastle were dealt a first half injury blow when De Jong (who had been nursing a bruised toe) was forced off with a knock.
He was replaced by Ayoze Perez who linked up with Manu Riviere in attack.
On 27 minutes the fans rose on their feet to applaud Toon fan Liam Sweeney.
A West Ham team - led by Kevin Nolan - also applauded from the hospitality area of the stadium.
Wellington keeper Glen Moss made two good saves to deny Yoan Gouffran then Ayoze Perez as the half reached an end.
But three minutes before the interval a well worked corner from Jack Colback and Vurnon Anita found the head of Gouffran who rose to send a looping header in off the post.
Jack Colback missed a great chance right in front of goal before being tackled.
Newcastle made a change at the break with Abeid going off for Rolando Aarons after his first half injury.
On 48 minutes a Haidara cross was headed over by Gouffran who failed to repeat his first half heroics.
Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa was booked for a late and strong challenge.
56 minutes Rob Elliot dived low to deny Brockie’s left footed effort.
63 minutes and the match saw a minute’s applause for John Adler.
Perez scooped a chance over on 67 minutes and the ex-Tenerife man then picked out Gouffran on the right with 10 minutes left but he bent his shot wide.
With seven minutes of the friendly left goalscorer Gouffran was replaced by Adam Campbell.
The game ended with a third injury for the Magpies.
This time Aarons picked up a knock to his left leg and was taken off.
