The fan-led initiative aims to put on visual displays at St James’ Park this season and organisers have collected cash to buy flags to be waved in the Gallowgate End.
But sadly some flags were taken at the end of the match, and not left in the ground.
Supporters answered the call to get into the ground early and skip that final pre-match pint in the pub ahead of the sell-out home-opener.
Unfortunately, Newcastle fell 1-2 to Huddersfield Town, but supporters speaking after the match outside the Gallowgate End were pleased with the atmosphere.
Darren McCann said: “It was great. I went for about 2.30pm, I thought it was great, like watching Liverpool when they play Bayern Munich or someone in Europe.”
Darren is hoping the players take inspiration from the fans and is confident the colourful displays will eventually pay-off.
He said: “It does make a difference, because the fans are the 12th man. It’s a shame about the result, but never mind, it’s early days yet.”
Paul Husband and Stephen Walker were also impressed with the flags and songs belted out in the run-up to kick-off.
“The atmosphere was really good in the beginning,” said Paul
“At the start it was brilliant,” agreed Stephen.
“It wasn’t reflected on the pitch though,” added Paul.
Both agreed it is too early to judge Newcastle’s season, despite two losses in their first two games.
“He [Benitez] doesn’t know what his team is yet,” said Paul.
“We’ve got to play two up front at home, Mitrovic and Gayle will work,” Stephen added.
Fans also praised Gallowgate Flags on Twitter.
Supporter Ben Harvey wrote: “The Gallowgate Flags did exactly what was intended. Created a cracking atmosphere and got behind the team but again we lacked badly.”
But, sadly, it appears some fans took flags home with them instead of leaving them in St James’ Park for the next game.
According to Gallowgate Flags, around 80 flags were missing after the match.
Gallowgate Flags posted on Twitter to condemn supporters.
Their post said: “Congratulations to all who did so much today to help out.
“Disappointing result and sad to have flags stolen.”
Newcastle United - and Gallowgate Flags - will be back in action on Wednesday, when the Magpies take on Reading.
