... Newcastle’s travelling supporters in Schalke.

Twenty one people were arrested following fights on the streets of Dusseldorf on Friday ahead of Saturday’s 3-1 defeat against Spanish side Malaga.

Then on Sunday, Magpies fans were attacked by West Ham supporters inside Schalke’s Veltins-Arena in Gelsenkirchen.

Alan Pardew: “They conducted themselves superbly under some provocation. Well done to them.”

Newcastle fan Andy Thompson: “It was a fantastic weekend - all the Newcastle fans were well behaved and the Germans were lovely towards us - but it was spoilt by mindless West Ham hooligans.

“My wife had gone to the bar and I just happened to have my camera when things kicked off below me.

“The West Ham fans charged in and were hitting people, then the police turned up with batons and pepper sprayed the West Ham fans. It was like something from the 70s.

“It took five to 10 minutes to calm down, then they sealed the area we were in.

“My wife was told to stand outside - I was quite relieved when I found her again.

“What happened really spoilt our day and when the final whistle went the Newcastle fans left - nobody wanted to stay and support West Ham after what had happened.

“The next day there was an awful atmosphere in the ground - a West Ham fan came into the Newcastle end and was waving a flag. There was no need for that.”

Toon fan Peter Fanning: “Schalke, Malaga and Newcastle fans mingled and everyone was having a great time.

“But clearly there was some trouble with the West Ham fans - only their part of the ground was segregated.

“There were some flags saying ‘Inter City Firm on tour,’ which would be a well known hooligan group from years ago - and the guys with it were in their 40s and 50s, so they could have been members.

“At the very least I hope that West Ham aren’t invited back to a tournament like that.

“Everyone else mixed really well - there was a festival atmosphere outside the ground and everyone really enjoyed themselves.

“Schalke went out of their way to welcome us from abroad and it’s a shame that idiots come along and spoil things.”
