What A Waste - A Chance To Boost Confidence

SUNDAY'S PREMIER RESULTS

Bolton 2 Man Utd 2
Wolves 1 Aston Villa 2
Newcastle 1 Stoke 2

As it happens we suffered our second home defeat on the trot and find ourselves in 10th place, nestled next to the Mackems.

As we all know ...  James Perch's own goal handed Stoke all three points as they won 2-1 at Newcastle by virtue of a concerted fightback.

Trailing to Kevin Nolan's 43-minute penalty after a poor first-half display, the Potters got themselves back on terms when Sunderland old-boy Kenwyne Jones headed home from close range with 67 minutes gone.

But there was worse to come for the Magpies when Perch headed Matthew Etherington's 85th-minute corner into his own net under pressure from Robert Huth.

Manchester United failed to take maximum advantage of defeats for title rivals Chelsea and Arsenal when they were forced to settle for a point from a 2-2 draw at Bolton.

United twice found themselves behind, first to Zat Knight's early flick and then to Martin Petrov's second-half effort.

But Nani's solo strike brought them level first time around before substitute Michael Owen flicked home the winger's free-kick to earnt his side a point.

As United have now conceded nine goals in five league games and trail leaders Chelsea by three points, it was not the best of weekends for them, nor an out-of-sorts Wayne Rooney, who was replaced half-an-hour from the end.

Emile Heskey's late goal enabled Gerard Houllier to emerge triumphant from his first Premier League match in charge of Aston Villa as they beat Wolves 2-1.

The former England striker celebrated his first league start for six months by heading home an 87th-minute cross from Stephen Warnock.

Matt Jarvis' first goal of the campaign looked to have rescued Wolves a point after Stewart Downing's close-range effort separated the sides at half-time.
