England claimed a fine 2-1 victory over Australia in a friendly encounter at Wembley on Friday night and the headlines after the game were unsurprisingly dominated by debutant Marcus Rashford, who managed to score within the first few minutes of the game.
While the match would have been a special occasion for Rashford, it was an important one for Newcastle United winger Andros Townsend as well.
Townsend came on as a substitute during the 76th minute of the game for Raheem Sterling and the appearance was the 24-year-old’s first since October 12th, 2015, when he featured in a 3-0 away victory over Lithuania.
Townsend did pretty well when he came on but one could hear jeers directed at the winger when he made his way onto the pitch, presumably from the Sunderland fans in attendance.
The Newcastle United man was aware of boos directed at him during the game and has now gone on to take to Twitter to post a sarcastic response.
Townsend’s selection into the England national team has been criticized by many due to the fact that he did not perform consistently throughout the course of the campaign and it will now be interesting to see if the winger is included in the final 23-man Three Lions squad travelling to France.
Feels good to be back playing in an England shirt again!! Nice little reception that was too haha
