The French winger is back in Newcastle after suffering a groin injury back in July – and in Steve McClaren’s era of second chances it wouldn’t be beyond the realms of possibility that he’d be back involved in the autumn and winter months.
Marveaux never convinced Alan Pardew or John Carver that he could cut it at Premier League level, but he was rarely given a concerted run in the side.
Injuries have clearly affected his time at St James’ Park but he has shown in bursts that he has the pace, technique and attacking intent that could be an asset for Newcastle. McClaren, who has handed Gabriel Obertan game time since taking over, might just use that.
Talking about the French winger, Paul Simpson said: “Without wishing to tempt fate, we’re in a decent place at the moment.
“Sylvain Marveaux has come back from France where he’s been doing the early stages of his rehab. We’re hoping that he’ll be back out on the training field in the next week or two.
“He’s doing work with the medical department as the first stage of his rehab and we’ll then step that up with the other staff and back into the football side of it.”
Marveaux hasn’t played since March and was one of the names circulated in the summer to interested clubs. Like Mike Williamson, Yoan Gouffran and others, his availability was no secret.
