Owen Coyle: “Any former player heading back to their club who has worn the shirt with tremendous pride, and played at a high level, is due a great reception.

“I would hope the Bolton fans give him that because he was at this club for about ten years.

“He is a very gifted player and the fact he was captain at this football club shows you the esteem he was held in.

“He’s a very dangerous opponent and I’m sure he’ll be motivated against his former club.

“We’ll have to nullify his threat, just as we will Andy Carroll. We’re respectful of the terrific players they have got.

“It’s a tough time for everyone financially.

“That said, I think the crowds and the atmosphere generally has been of a very high standard.

“I feel there has been a better atmosphere this season than the one we came into, when you can understand there was a lot of nerves.

“With not being an elite club, sometimes we all take for granted that Bolton Wanderers have been in the Premier League for 10 years. It’s nice if you can generate that freshness, enthusiasm and energy – because fans come along with that.

“There’s no doubt it can improve and, come Saturday, I expect there will be a great atmosphere. Newcastle bring fans wherever they go.”
