God knows what they will build for the next manager who wins something!
Former Toon legend Alan Shearer’s career will finally be honoured with a statue - thanks to ex-Magpie chief Freddy Shepherd.
Mr Shepherd had commissioned local artist Tom Maley to produce the artwork around eight years ago before plans were put on hold.
And now the project to create the 9ft structure has been revived by Shepherd Offshore, owned by Mr Shepherd and his brother Bruce, who have footed the six-figure bill for the statue.
A number of city centre spots have been earmarked for the statue’s home, as well as the Palace of Arts in Exhibition Park.
Mr Shepherd said: “Shepherd Offshore are happy to underwrite this project, which is long overdue.
“We are happy to pay for it to honour a fantastic sportsman.”
And it is hoped the project will be finished in around four months time.
