Jack Charlton was never accepted at St James' Park, either, after humiliating Peter Beardsley on the pitch after the England international created a goal against Watford in the dying minutes of a game.
Charlton charged on the field after the final whistle to blast the player, saying he was instructed to take the ball to the corner flag and "waste time".
A moment Pedro recalls in detail in his book.
The Geordies never took to Charlton's 'long-ball' game, and he took stick in a pre-season friendly against Sheffield United and walked away from the job after the game.
Jack Charlton: “It seems like everybody in Newcastle is surprised.
“Chris was a background boy and more of a trainer and looking after things on the training pitch.
“He was more instituted than anything.
“But he’s proved himself to be a good manager, a good number one and he deserves some credit.
“Chris for me was a great lad, he was my left-back and played for me on several occasions for the Irish national team.
“He was terrific.
“I was delighted when somebody gave him an opportunity at Newcastle because he is a very knowledgeable lad.
“He knows the game inside out.
“And he can be good for Newcastle.
“It looked like at one point we were going to get somebody who is a big name.
“For me that’s Chris Hughton.
“He is a big name, he was a big player at Tottenham Hotspur and he’s played in the World Cup finals and the European Championships.
“I like Chris, I think he’s a very nice lad.
“Every single Newcastle supporter needs to know that.
“If they met Chris they’d like him, he’s smashing and I honestly, if I think about it, can’t say nothing bad about him.
“He’s not what I call a shouter, he never was like that.
“He just knows the business and knows what to say to people at the right times.
“I’m glad he’s had an opportunity to show that he knows the game.
“I can’t say too much on Boro v Newcastle, I have to be neutral as former manager of them both!
“I support Newcastle, Leeds and Middlesbrough.
“And I think a draw would be better for me.
“What you can say is that it will probably be a great contest.
“As long as the game is an enjoyable one, that’s what’s important to me.
“But I wish Chris all the best for the game.”
