Who Wants To Play For Newcastle United?

Yes, officially he resigned, we know that. But it was chairman Freddy Shepherd who called the board meeting after the Blackburn defeat ... NOT Glenn Roeder. And I think we all know what went on behind closed doors.

Roeder resigned, with a brown paper bag sticking out of his arse pocket (allegedly).

The fact remains, United did better playing the kids than the established names. A fact. So who's to blame? The heartless players or a manager who couldn't motivate?

On Sunday Lee Clark and Nigel Pearson had a similar problem getting "star players" to play, and Clark praised the Newcastle United players who DID want to play at Vicarage Road.

The Toon coach is expected to keep his role as reserve-team boss regardless of who comes in as manager at St James' Park this week, and saw many of his second string regulars in action at Watford.

Indeed Matty Pattison, Alan O'Brien, Peter Ramage and Andy Carroll were all heavily involved in Hertfordshire and with Oba Martin AWOL and Charles N'Zogbia sulking after being dropped, and Clark was grateful to the players who did turn up for the last game of the season.

Clark: "We picked 16 players who we thought would show commitment and desire to the black-and-white shirt and that is what they did.
"It has been quite a tough week, it is never easy when a manager loses their job. I have never enjoyed it throughout my career when a manager goes, especially when you are part of the backroom staff.

"We all thought highly of Glenn Roeder and it has been tough.

"To be fair to the players, they have responded. The game wasn't a classic by any stretch of the imagination.

"But what was shown by all of the players on the pitch and on the bench is they wanted to play for Newcastle United and wanted to show that commitment.

"They did that. We could have done things better in terms of our passing, but I was pleased with the desire of the players who did pull on the jersey."
