“For they will always be on the outskirts of that.”
Are we expecting too much?
As for population, Newcastle are nowhere near as big as Liverpool or Manchester ... but the Magpies are a one-club city ... the Reds have Everton, and Man Utd have Man City.

Plus, the West have a massive infux of clubs in such a small area - Blackburn, Bolton, Burnley, Bury ... and that is just the clubs beginnning with "B"!
Sadly, funds from the turnstiles (and we get the third biggest attendances in the country) only add up to a fraction of money generated.
Newcastle have the Mackems eight miles down the road and the Smogs further down the A19. That is not much competition for a club as big as Newcastle.
But, as we are reminded every season, we have not won the league since 1927 and the FA Cup since 1955.
Something is wrong somewhere.
