Despite already having signed six new players, Benitez’s business in the transfer window is still unfinished, and he is determined to keep his side adrift in the top-flight this season.
Following suggestions of Andy Carroll possibly making a return to the Magpies before the transfer window, the Spaniard conceded that there was no talk of it – but hinted at activity still being conducted “behind the scenes”.
The 28-year-old striker, who joined Liverpool on a then-record fee of £35m, made 91 appearances for the Toons and was a product of the youth academy. Carroll netted seven times in 18 appearances for the Hammers last season, and was the club’s third-highest goalscorer.
Andy Carroll was West Ham’s third-highest goalscorer last season, with 7 goals in 18 appearances.
“There’s no news. I haven’t read the newspapers, we have to wait,” he said about Carroll.
“Obviously we are working behind the scenes trying to do things but I don’t know which is our position at the moment.”
“We will need time, but I am sure we can improve. Does the team have goals in it? Yes, I think so. I think we will improve, and we will create more chances and score goals, for sure.”
