Pardew tried to dip into the summer transfer market for defensive reinforcements but his bid for Brazilian central defender Douglas was withdrawn by Joe Kinnear, who said the player "wasn't good enough".
So, after seeing Fabricio Coloccini sidelined for up to six weeks with a knee complaint forcing him to miss a crucial stage of the season, it was thought Pardew would try again.
But that is not the case.
Alan Pardew said in the Daily Star: "Colo's knee injury is a grade two and therefore doesn't need surgery, so it's a process of between four to six weeks.
"But I don't think that means me making a transfer. I don't see why I should do that.
"I've got Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa here, who we paid £8.5million for, and he was very unlucky to lose his place, while there's also Steven Taylor, who we know is a great player.
"So there's no need for any knee-jerk reaction."
It seems the Toon boss has had a rethink after the great form of Mike Williamson ... who was told he could leave the club (by Pardew) six months ago!
