Newcastle midfield functioning fine as Howe’s team climb table
Newcastle United made it four wins from the last five Premier League matches on Saturday by beating Brentford 2-0 in London.
Midfielder Joe Willock was on target for the second game in succession, after Joelinton had given the Magpies the lead. With Jonjo Shelvey playing the central role, with Willock and Joelinton either side of him, the midfield may not look like many Newcastle fans would have expected it to, but it has proved to be extremely effective under the new manager.
Certain sections of the local media have been making repeated calls for new signing Bruno Guimaraes to get a start but Toon fans seem to be happy with the way the team are currently lining up and performing under Howe’s new approach and don’t seem overly concerned about Guimaraes having to bide his time. The former Lyon midfielder made another appearance from the bench on Saturday and he has shown glimpses of why Newcastle chose to bring him to the club last month but while the team are getting positive results there is no real rush to change a formula that is working.
