The former England defender's career looked to be in the balance when he failed to make the 25-man squad at the start of the campaign due to a long-standing groin injury.
But the 29-year-old has now started a pre-season schedule at White Hart Lane.
Harry Redknapp said: "It's fantastic for him.
"It's the first time in 18 months or so that there's a bit of light at the end of the tunnel for him.
"He could play this season, if he keeps progressing."
